The group has been running coming up to seven years. Friendship club provides a great way for like-minded local older people to get together and enjoy each other’s company.

The group also organize their own outings, such as too Southend and Eastbourne, as well as go to the theatre and even have theatre groups come to them!

Combatting social isolation and loneliness:

The Centre provides the space and hosts a range of activities open to local older residents to help combat social isolation and loneliness.

Age UK wrote an Evidence Review on Loneliness which states:

*Nearly half of older people (49% of 65+ UK) say that television or pets are their main form of company
*Loneliness can be as harmful to our health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day
*People with a high degree of loneliness are twice as likely to develop Alzheimer’s as people with a low degree of loneliness
